When you get right down to brass tacks, most successful businesses are pretty boring. Really!
How many boring hamburgers does your local McDonalds crank out in a year? How many boring oil changes does Jiffy Lube perform for their customers every day? How often do Amazon employees wrap up a boring package of books to be shipped worldwide?
Many of today's most successful companies are at the top of their niche because they have mastered the execution of very boring business subjects and activities. They understand how to execute their boring routine over and over and over again; usually better and cheaper than anyone else.
Profitable companies develop systems of execution based on testing, modifying, and refining. Once they determine what works best, they simply repeat that formula or system over and over again.
How boring is that - especially if you're a solo entrepreneur?
But there is no reason that the solo entrepreneur can't follow the lead of big business and execute in a similar fashion.
Of course, you won't attempt to compete in selling burgers or books like the big boys. But within your specialized niche, is an open door for a company that masters execution of what others would call "boring" topics and tasks.
General practitioners will find the challenge of business profitability much greater than extreme specialists. Knowing a little about a lot of subjects is fine if you're a consumer; but as a producer of information, you are much more valuable and highly paid if you are a master of just one or two subjects that have consumer appeal.
When you are the expert in your chosen niche, you are in a position to develop products and services wanted by your anxious prospects. That's when it pays to develop your system of execution to put those products in the hands of your customers.
Then your business becomes a repeatable task: the continual execution of your profitable formula.
Whatever you set up, you simply do it over and over and over again. And the income shows up in your bank account over and over and over again.
There's nothing real glamorous or exciting about consistently repeating business tasks; but it is profitable and doable by anyone.
Automation is the solution to retaining your sanity in the midst of repeating boring tasks - figure out ways to automate the chores and processes (1) you don't like doing, (2) you're not capable of doing, (3) you can't do profitably on your own, or (4) you waste your valuable time doing.
Digital business is wonderful because programmers and technicians provide so many automation tools and resources that reduce the time you'll have to spend executing tasks.
If you execute your business in a smart way, you will be left with more time to research, create, experience, and share your niche topics with your customers. And to my way of thinking, those are the things that you can really enjoy doing on a daily basis!
